RTHK’s In the Common Room

1 Dec , 2025

This term, two groups of our students were invited to RTHK Broadcast House to record episodes of the popular youth programme In the Common Room, giving them a rare chance to be heard by listeners across Hong Kong.

On 21 October, Angie from 3A and Issac from 2B sat in the professional studio to talk about their success in the Ocean Park Animal Photo-Poetry Competition. They explained how they paired evocative photographs with original poems to express their feelings about perseverance and benevolence, proudly revealing that both had won prizes in the contest.

A month later, on 19 November, Crystal, Cindy, Kyle and Hin, all from 5C, tackled the thought-provoking topic of “commitment”. With poise and maturity, they discussed what it means to stay dedicated to goals, friendships, family and personal values in today’s fast-paced world.

These broadcasting experiences sharpened their public-speaking skills, boosted confidence and let our students represent the school brilliantly on a major public platform. Congratulations to all!

The Common Room experience was quite lovely - a nice host, an interesting interview and a delicious reward at the end! Before that, I had written some bullet points in order to prepare for the interview. Though, during the interview, I completely freestyled all my answers. I had some slip ups and mistakes, but we all laughed it off and had a smooth interview. At the end of the day, we even got ice cream! It is an honour to be able to participate and share this experience. It was truly a very special day!

My time being interviewed - alongside my partner Isaac – by DJ Alyson Hau at RTHK was amazing. Alyson was an incredible host who greeted both of us with great enthusiasm and compassion. She was very patient with us, and we all had a whale of a time with one another. We even got to take some group photos together and overall, the atmosphere was just top tier. I am extremely grateful for such an opportunity. Thank you to anyone who tuned in on the radio show!

It was absolutely amazing talking with all the people at RTHK Broadcast House. I loved the experience of immersing myself in the creative and unrestrained environment. RTHK’s radio show offered me the opportunity to dive deep into an inspiring exchange with my thoughtful classmates and the enthusiastic DJ. Great thanks to our teacher Mr. Byron, who encouraged and inspired us so much, and led us to a higher level of performance with his energy and wisdom.

It was a very valuable opportunity for us to attend the podcast show with the professional DJ from RTHK. Although the experience made us nervous at first, the tension didn’t impact our performance. We shared our own insights into ‘commitment’ and all of us spoke confidently during the recording. This was largely thanks to our preparation and practice with Mr. Byron before the podcast! It was my great honour to participate in the recording.

The discussion was really fun and the interactions during the recording were absolutely amazing! The DJ also comforted us before the recording
and helped us a lot to relax. It was my pleasure to have a session in such a renowned radio station with a professional DJ.

After going to RTHK to record a show with my classmates and a professional DJ, I found that it really helped build my self-confidence as I had been afraid of talking with peers and giving speeches in public. So, I would say this programme not only enhanced my language skills but also improved my self-esteem.
